About GSM Association (GSMA) and GSM Asia Pacific (GSMAP)
GSM Asia Pacific (GSMAP) is the Asia pacific Interest group of the GSM Association (GSMA), the global association behind the world’s leading wireless communications standard. GSM, representing over 700 GSM mobile phone operators across 218 countries and territories of the world.
GSMA is positioning mobile communications as the most effective means of bridging the digital divide and promoting social inclusion prevalent in the emerging markets. Accordingly the goal of connecting the unconnected remains a key and a very realistic ongoing priority for the GSMA and its members.
The primary goals of the GSMA are to ensure mobile phones and wireless services work globally and are easily accessible, enhancing their value to individual customers and national economies, while creating new business opportunities for operators and their suppliers. The Association’s members serve more than two billion customers - 82% of the world’s mobile phone users.
GSMAP, covers over 136 operators in 49 countries/areas in Asia Pacific, serving over 1 Billion Subscribers. The Asia Pacific Interest Group spans the Pacific rim, Australia/New Zealand, China and South East Asian countries.. The region accounts for over 45% of the world’s GSM subscribers and enjoys the third fastest growth rate in the GSM world. It is expected that the Asia Pacific region would account for approximately 40% of the next billion mobile users.
In 2007 and beyond, GSMAP will focus its attention on resolving specific issues unique to the region while ensuring the continued growth and contribution made by GSM to national GDP, employment and government revenue in the vast majority of countries in the region.
